Rural Outreach Center(ROC)
The NHSDC, Inc., the Center, and the University's College of Architecture and College of Engineering are working together to establish a Rural Outreach Center (ROC) in Carrizo Springs (Dimmit County). Plans call for renovating several vacant buildings to house the ROC. The ROC will include studios/classrooms, offices, and a computer center. It is designed to serve as a staging area/learning center for UTSA students participating in special studies and projects dealing with rural areas, small communities and colonias in the region.
IH-35 South Economic Development Coalition
The Center is actively engaged in the development of this corridor initiative. It is also in the process of working an economic growth strategy for the region, which includes Atascosa, Frio, La Salle and Medina counties centered on the IH-35 South Corridor.
Past Projects
Neighborhood Housing Services of Dimmit County, Inc. (NHSDC, Inc.) Multi-community Project - Dimmit/La Salle Counties
This project was designed to help five small, rural communities in Dimmit and La Salle counties to improve the quality of life for their citizens, enhance business development and create new job opportunities. It is also focused on improving community infrastructures and housing conditions.
Market Trail/Community Museum Network
The Center provided ongoing technical assistance to the El Camino Real Market Trail Economic Development Corporation serving seven South Texas counties to facilitate economic development through tourism. As part of the effort, the Center in association with Market Tail, established a Community Museum Network comprised of community-based museums throughout the seven-county region (Atascosa, Dimmit, Frio, La Salle, McMullen, Uvalde and Zavala counties) to serve as destination points for tourists and to foster local economic development.
Renewable Energy-Sustainable Development Initiative
The Center spearheaded a broad based project focusing on renewable energy resources, technologies and sustainable development in the South Texas region. This was a combined research/technical assistance project. Its goal was to develop a strategic framework to move South Texas into a sustainable economy based, in part on renewable energy resources and technologies.
